If I cover my nose

As with most of my ideas this one started out really simple. Imagine if you could see yourself, in the flesh, at a different age, right in front of you. What would that do to you?
The story built itself around the idea that my main character would have loved to write as a boy then for some reason lost his drive to write as he grew up. Seeing himself at the age when he dreamt about writing amazing stories would spur him into writing again (and would also provide the perfect subject matter). It’s funny how the simplest ideas get convoluted really quickly.
So I started writing and kept going until I felt I was finished. Having performed spoken word for a couple of years I knew that I could write for my own voice so the challenge was to push that form to new ground for me in terms of scale, density and character development. I wanted to make something that took me beyond anything else I’d ever done and kept me excited. A massive part of the process has been working with Yael in terms of direction and the best way to relay the story. To work closely with someone on work I feel close to has been amazing and to trust someone enough to share something as it develops has been a completely new and beneficial process for me.
Working with an artist in creating visual representations of my characters and their relationships was something that I never imagined doing which is why I’m so pleased with what Goonism has produced. Bold, emotional characters who have the feel of people carrying a lot behind their faces. Perfect.
